The trailhead to the lakes was burned recently, however recreationists will notice that many of the plants are sprouting back, as is expected in the natural fire ecosystems of Northern California. The lakes are also beautiful and worth the hike.

Non-motorized boats only. Packable rubber rafts, and float tubes are used by some fishermen in the wilderness areas.

A valid California state fishing license is needed to fish within the National Forest. Licenses are sold at sporting good and other retail stores. Basic Directions
Bear and Upper Bear Lakes can be accessed via Happy Camp on Highway 96. About eight miles down river from Happy Camp, take the first road south of Clear Creek that goes west (15N19), which leads to the Elbow Springs Trailhead, and subsequently, Kelsey Trail to the lakes. The walk is approximately three miles.
