  • Block Island

This seaside get-away is plopped down in the Atlantic Ocean, 15 miles off the mainland of Rhode Island. Two-hundred foot bluffs look out over the restless tide and the Great Salt Pond nurtures a host of wildlife rarely seen elsewhere. And little ferries, filled with passengers, chug back and forth to the rocky nest from Port Judith on the mainland. This magnificent, little rock lures thousands to its shores. The island overflows with natural beauty -- gentle hills, Early American homes, stone walls, meadows painted with wildflowers, and towering bluffs perched over the pounding tide.

  • Corvallis

Home to Oregon State University, Corvallis is in many ways an archetypal college town, boasting abundant coffeehouses, pizza places and bookstores around the green, ivy-bedecked campus at its heart. But the city is just as green and vibrant outside the vicinity of the 500-acre campus, where the area maintains a small-town, country feel.

  • Eugene

Eugene is a south Willamette Valley haven nestled between the Cascade and Coast ranges. The blue-green Willamette River and surrounding Douglas fir forests have lent Eugene the nickname of "The Emerald City." Rated as one of the top 10 cycling cities in the U.S., Eugene is perhaps more famous for its eccentric residents and progressive initiatives.

  • Florence

Florence is a small city near the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. In addition to beautiful beaches out of town, Florence has a little harbor and small downtown area easily explored on an afternoon meander.

  • Lincoln City

Visitors to Lincoln City in summer are spoiled for choice. Spread out along seven miles of scenic sandy beaches, the town itself gives way to sandy beaches, inland hiking, fishing and windsurfing, and more.

  • Middletown

Middletown is a swimsuit community with a population of 17,334. With several beaches to call its own, it is centrally located between Narragansett Bay and the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island. One of the most popular attractions in Middletown is the Norman Bird Sanctuary with more than 350 acres of beachside trails. Biking is a great way to take to the trails, especially in the crisp autumn days. Bird watching at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a popular pastime here, and catching the views of a radiant sunset on Third Beach is another.

  • Salem

Salem is Oregon's capitol, and is also a capital place from which to launch explorations of sites both cultural and natural. Residents and visitors enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Willamette University campus, the Greek-style capitol building, and nearby state parks and recreation areas.

  • Warwick

Warwick, the second largest town in Rhode Island, is composed of 30 separate villages each with a distinctive personality. The community is centrally located and surrounded by 39 miles of shoreline, giving it an edge on both business and tourism. Peering out over the beautiful Narragansett Bay, Warwick has a bit of brine in its blood. Four of its parks are salt-water beaches. Along with the usual beach activities, City Park offers hiking, biking and softball. Finding something to sink the teeth into is easy. Restaurants are almost as prevalent as retail stores.

  • Westerly

At the heart of Westerly, lies an 18-acre Victorian park with colorful gardens, an arboretum, and titillating statues. Home to many hours of summertime pleasures from lazy strolls to concerts, art shows and Shakespearean plays, Wilcox Park embodies all the characteristics that make this town great ? charm and dignity, beauty and entertainment. Soft ocean breezes and the tide rumbling to shore. Old New England homes, neat but weathered by the salt air, peering out over the restless sea. Lapping sounds of the water as it spanks little boats huddled in a marina. These, too, are scenes from the world of Westerly.
