Forget That Croissant: Trade in Portland, Oregon, Hotels for a Bed and Big Breakfast

Description

So you’re planning a stay in the “Rose City” and the time comes to find a Portland, Oregon, hotel in which to rest your weary head. And Portland has some fine hotels, both boutique and international chains, that could go on your list. But we have a suggestion. Get off the beaten path a little with a weekend stay in one of this pretty city’s atmospheric bed and breakfasts. Never stayed in a bed and breakfast before? You’re in for a treat. Exchange one standard hotel room and rather insipid continental breakfast for a period-furnished room in some grand turn-of-the-century home and a real breakfast. If you ask nicely, they might just deliver it to your room.

Even in a city as large as Portland, bed and breakfasts are relatively few in number. There are hardly more than a baker’s dozen in Portland itself, with an additional handful to be found in surrounding suburbs, like Gresham, St. Helens and even Camas, Washington. As you winnow down this manageable selection, it helps to have your priorities straight. Would you prefer a Victorian mansion (like The Lion and the Rose Victorian Bed & Breakfast) or something more, well, political, like Portland’s White House? An inexpensive urban farmhouse with fresh breakfast eggs (Tierra Soul Urban Farmhouse) or a historic English Tudor mansion that comes with personal fireplace and gourmet breakfast (try Heron Haus)? Beautiful private gardens (Enchanted Garden Suite) or acres of parkland (Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast)? The difficulty is clearly in the decision making.

So yes, you can stay in a very nice Portland, Oregon, hotel. Or you can gain fresh perspective and put a unique spin on your stay in the Rose City by retreating to some peaceful bed and breakfast, where atmosphere - and fresh quiche - is part of the affordable package. Tempted? You should be.
