Description

This trail alternates very steep pitches with gentle benches following a ridge through mostly open, grassy ponderosa pine forest with impressive views of Black Canyon Wilderness from the prominent benches on the ridge followed by the trail. Kelsey Trail has received limited maintenance for a number of years, and is currently being reconsidered for addition to the regular maintenance program. The trail is not signed at trailhead or junction with Black Canyon Trail No. 820. The route is poorly marked and is not maintained annually.

Basic Directions

From Paulina, travel 13 miles toward Rager Ranger Station. Turn north (left) at Sugar Creek Day Use Area onto Forest Road #5810. Travel 10½ miles on #5810 to FR #38. Turn east (right) onto FR #38, following it approximately 8½ miles to FR #3800-640. The unmarked trailhead is on the east side of Kelsey Reservoir on FR #3800-640. Limited roadside parking is available.
