Description
Pioneer Bridle Trail connects the villages Government Camp and Rhododendron. Part of the trail follows segments of the historic Barlow Road, part of the Oregon Trail. A trail tunnel goes under a now abandon section of old highway. The whole trail stays in the forest and is within earshot of the highway. From Glacier View Trailhead this trail descends most of its length to Tollgate. The first segment from Glacier View to the "tunnel” is mostly under a 10% grade and is fairly wide. From the tunnel the trail climbs up to a mineshaft then descends more steeply with grades up to 20+% to where it crosses Hwy 26. This section also has a narrower trail width. From Hwy 26 the grade becomes gentler staying mostly under 10% but several areas of the trail section are very rocky.
Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: This trail is open to hikers, horses and mt bikes so an awareness and consideration of other users is key here. When meeting stock face to face, stop and go to the downhill side of the trail and talk with the rider. The human voice reassures the horse. Don’t hide behind a tree. If wanting to pass a horse from the back, talk to the rider and ask where it would be a good place to do so. Mt bikers need to check their speed at points on the trail where blind spots might be hiding other users on the trail.
Leave No Trace Principles ?? Plan Ahead and Prepare Be Considerate of Other Visitors ?? Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Leave What You Find ?? Dispose of Waste Properly Minimize Campfire Impacts ?? Respect Wildlife.
