Description

This trail accesses the 44,560-acre Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. . On a clear day the butte offers views of Mt. Hood and the Salmon River valley. Rhododendron, larkspur, paintbrush, beargrass and stonecrop all bloom along the trail. Salmon Butte Trail climbs 3000’ over its 4.5 miles through the forest to the 4,870’ Salmon Butte. At a few sites the trail with is narrow.

Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: ?? Wilderness Permits are required between May 15 and Oct 15, but are free and self-issuing at a permit box station along the trail. ?? Group size is limited to 12. On trails that allow stock, stock are counted in the group size. For example, 3 people each riding their own horse plus a spare horse in the group for packing would make a group of 7. ?? Unproccessed livestock feed is prohibited, preventing non-native plant spread.

Noxious weeds have taken a small hold in the Mt Hood area. To prevent from bringing non-native plants into the forest, clean your animal, trailer, truck and gear before leaving home. A few days before your trip, change your stock over to processed feed and only allow it to graze in weed free pasture.

Basic Directions

Follow U.S. Highway 26, 17 miles east of Sandy. Turn south on Salmon River Road 2618, following it 6.7 miles past two bridges.
