Description
The West Eagle trail provides access to Echo, Traverse, Diamond and Tombstone lakes as well as a beautiful trip along the Minam River. You can also access many other destinations in the wilderness from this trail. Fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities abound as you travel through diverse landscapes of meadows, lakes, and mountains.
NW Forest Passes are required at West Eagle Trailhead.
This trail crosses West Eagle Creek twice in the first 2 1/2 miles. This creek crossing can be difficult in the spring and early summer when runoff is high. Be prepared for variations in trail terrain. There are many switchbacks and stream crossings on this trail before reaching Wonker Pass. After descending to the Minam River and hiking along the river for about 4 1/2 miles, you will begin the return trip, via Elk Creek (trail # 1944). You will have more switchbacks to Diamond Lake and Tombstone Lake, before reaching another pass, then decending to the trailhead. There are many opportunities for camping along the trail. There is parking at the trailhead. Outhouse toilets, stock loading ramps, hitch rails and picnic tables are also available at the trailhead. There is plenty of water along the route, but carrying drinking water is recommended.
