Description

This trail affords you a wonderful view of the Matterhorn and Sacajawea peaks. You will travel through meadows of wildflowers and forested areas. A variety of wildflowers may be seen throughout the summer and early fall. Three miles from the trailhead you have a view of Slick Rock Falls. Echo Lake contains small but tasty brook trout. Fishing is also good in Billy Jones Lake. The west ridge above Echo Lake offers splendid views of the Lostine River Canyon. Make sure to pack your camera to enjoy this challenging journey.

NW Forest Passes are required at the Hurricane Creek Trailhead.

This area is subject to flash flooding and at times the road to the trailhead or the trail may be blocked at a relatively low elevation. The trail to Echo Lake is not maintained for stock use. It is steep and rocky as it climbs out of the valley, rising 2,400' in just over 3 miles.Plenty of time should be allowed for this hike, especially the last 3 miles and especially if you are carrying a full pack. A suggestion might be to camp close to the junction of the Hurricane Creek and Echo Lake Trails and continue the remainder of the hike into Echo Lake the second day.

First 5 miles heavy in summer and fall (horses and hikers), light to Echo Lake
