No Last Resort: Mount Hood Hotels

Description

As the popular mountain playground of outdoor enthusiasts from the Portland metropolitan area and beyond, Mount Hood sees a steady stream of tourist traffic year-round. Skiers and snowboarders come for the slopes when there’s snow, while hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers generally flock here in warmer weather to make the most of quiet trails and memorable scenery. Which is why it should come as no surprise to learn that in terms of Mount Hood hotels, you have choices to make.

Self-sufficient sorts will find condos, cabins, chalets and other rental properties to consider, but to ease the burden of large-party planning, we recommend a room someplace that has concierge service. You’ll find that the short list of resorts in the area range from single rooms and suites to full villas, with proximity to the slopes a given. The most recognizable face for a name? Timberline Lodge. This handsome historic building made a cameo appearance in the movie, The Shining, but in addition to its general charms, this one is right at the base of Mount Hood so it gets an A plus for convenience. They’re about 13 miles farther from the mountain in Welches, Oregon, but both Whispering Woods Resort and The Resort at the Mountain have in their favor proximity to Mount Hood Golf Course, in case that’s your thing.

Looking for more Mount Hood hotels? Somewhere in between the 18th hole and the mountain there’s Government Camp, an alpine village a snowball’s throw down the hill (about 5 miles) from Timberline. In addition to inns, motels, cabins, condos and Collins Lake Resort, this small community boasts a handful of pubs, bars and restaurants. And the village affords easy access to ski areas like Mount Hood Skibowl, Timberline Lodge and the smaller Summit Ski Area. You might find no room at the inn if you wait too long to book rooms for the holiday season, but midweek in winter you shouldn’t have to hunt far to put a roof over your head while enjoying the nation’s longest ski season (they even have skiing through the summer) at Timberline Lodge ski area.
