Description

The North Shore Trail No. 1608 traverses the northern banks of Phillips Reservoir connecting Mason Dam Boat Launch, Union Creek Campground, Social Security Point, Mowich Loop and Hudspeth Lane. The hiker will encounter outstanding views traveling through young growth ponderosa pine-type forest and grasslands bordering the reservoir. Numerous coves and inlets provide the opportunity for viewing waterfowl, shorebirds and an occasional deer.

Trailhead facilities at Mason Dam Boat Launch include toilets and parking area to accommodate 16 vehicles. Union Creek Campground provides potable water, bathrooms, fish cleaning house, and garbage facilities, in addition to an ample parking area. Social Security Point and Mowich Loop also provide toilets and parking.  The westernmost portion may be underwater when the reservoir is at its fullest.

Restrictions: Closed to all motorized vehicle use.

Basic Directions

From Baker City travel south on State Highway 7 to the Mason Dam Viewpoint (approximately 16.5 miles) and the entrance to the Mason Dam Boat Launch. The trail goes west from the boat launch.To access the trail from Social Security Point, continue on State Highway 7 for 2.8 miles to the Social Security Point Road. Turn left and continue 0.4 miles to the trailhead. To access the trail from Hudspeth Lane, continue on State Highway 7 to Hudspeth Lane. Turn left (south) and continue .5 mile and turn left into the graveled parking area.
