This trail accesses the 44,560-acre Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Lightly visited this is a great place for solitude. Follows a forested ridgeline that is known as Huckleberry Mt along its northern segment. Options for watering stock are thin at best and dry up as the season goes on. This trail stays along the ridgeline with the only significant sustained grade being between the Sheepshead rock and Salmon Mt Trail #787. There are some sections of 14-20% grade but they are short pitches. What makes this trail more difficult is the tread width being narrower.

Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: Regulations ?? Wilderness Permits are required between May 15 and Oct 15, but are free and self-issuing at a permit box station along the trail. ?? Group size is limited to 12. On trails that allow stock, stock are counted in the group size. For example, 3 people each riding their own horse plus a spare horse in the group for packing would make a group of 7. ?? Unproccessed livestock feed is prohibited, preventing non-native plant spread. ?? Note that the northern terminus of the trail is its intersection with Boulder Ridge Trail that is only a hiker trail.
