Description

The Pole Creek Ridge Trail No. 1624 follows Pole Creek Ridge up to the Elkhorn Crest Trail No. 1611, providing a short, although steep access route to the crest. The trail starts at the turnaround on spur Forest Road No. 5536-200, on top of a small knoll. It contours around the south side of the rocky knoll above the road and descends to a grassy saddle before ascending along the south side of the ridge through a stand of old growth ponderosa pine. From this point, most of the trail follows the open, dry fairly steep ridgeline to the crest. The open sagebrush and grass slopes offer views south and west towards Sumpter and the rolling hills beyond.
