Description

Rim Trail climbs steeply from the north end of Rock Creek Trail No. 823, following the drainage of First Creek through dense mixed conifer forest to reach the grassy open slopes on the west flanks of Spanish Peak. More moderate grades continue climbing easterly toward Spanish Peak, providing spectacular views of Rock Creek canyon, Rock Creek Lake (private), Spanish Peak summit, and into the valleys of Mountain Creek and the John Day River from the Spanish Peak escarpment rim. RIM TRAIL IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND INCOMPLETE. Trail is estimated to be ready for use in 2004.

Rim Trail will not be open to horse use in order to protect the historic ditch features along Rock Creek Trail No. 823 from damage through excessive stock use. The trail is designed, and will be cleared and maintained, only to accommodate hiking use. Alternative routes into the Spanish Peak area and upper slopes of Rock Creek for riders are provided by Apple Trail No. 817 and primitive Forest Road No. 3800-200.
