Description

This trail leads along the backbone of the Strawberry Mountains, in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness Area. It allows access to the upper end of the Big Creek drainage and to both Slide Lake and High Lake.

This trail is used primarily by big game hunters and horse users. there is an unloading ramp and hitchrail on the east end of the trail. The west end of the trail was burned in a 1990 fire.

Basic Directions

Western trailhead: from John Day take US Highway 395 south to County road 65/Forest Service road 15 to Forest Service road 16. Turn east on Forest Service road 16 to Forest Service road 1640. Go to the end of Forest Service road 1640 at High Lake Rim.

Eastern trailhead: from Prairie City take county road 65 to the John Day Summit and Forest Service road 101. The trailhead is approximately two miles on Forest Service road 101.
