Trail goes from Coyote Loop Trail No. 3962.0 to Swamp Wells Campground. The Skeleton Cave Trail No. 3963.1 and the Fuzztail Butte Trail No. 3965 start from this trail.

Back Trail descends in to the Cottonwood Creek drainage along ridge systems parallel to Back Creek through open ponderosa pine forest and mahogany thickets, to end in dense mixed conifer forest as it approaches Cottonwood Creek. Trail gradient ranges from relatively gentle to moderately steep.

Trail to Hot Springs open to Hiker Use Only. Trail clear to tubs. Southern access of trail open to equestrians. Self Service Fee Station is now operational for day use fees. Beyond Hot Springs, trail into wilderness has several trees and other obstructions across trail.
