The Cascade Range, which runs north-south from Northern California to Canada, is known for its massive, snow-capped mountains and the rich temperate rainforests on their western flanks.

Split into three seperate units, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument showcases a variety of fascinating fossils among striking landscapes and scenic trails. An interpretive center in the Sheep Rock Unit has a number of interesting exhibits about the ancient animals and geology of the area.

The largest urban area in Oregon, Portland is renowned as a clean, green and friendly city. Radiating around the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, the Portland area's lush green cityscape and inviting, walkable neighborhoods are the result of its mild temperate rainforest climate combined with progressive urban planning.

Salem is Oregon's capitol, and is also a capital place from which to launch explorations of sites both cultural and natural. Residents and visitors enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Willamette University campus, the Greek-style capitol building, and nearby state parks and recreation areas.
