Some may think that the drive up to the Oregon Caves National Monument is breath-taking, though whether it's for the age-old firs that frame the route or its tight corners is another thing altogether. There are official scenic byways located within steering distance to the north, around the Grants Pass and Roseburg area, and it's also possible to do a self-guided historic driving tour along HWY 46 with a return on Holland Loop Road, a trip that takes in a number of sites associated with Oregon's gold rush days. Keep in mind that during winter months, some of this region's forest byways can be impassable due to weather conditions.
